What’s user-generated content all about?

Think about it. Are you more likely to buy a product because the brand shouts about how good it is, or because a friend, or someone you know of, sings its praises? Most people are aligned with the latter.

This is where user-generated content comes in. Think about an occasion where you’ve been out for dinner. The environment was beautiful and the food delightfully presented — and it tasted even better. Perhaps you snapped a shot and shared it on Instagram, tagging in the restaurant. That’s a user-generated piece of content. In one social square you did a whole lot of quality marketing for free for the restaurant.

Why is this good for business? Having people willing to share their great experience with their friends, family, or following is gold. The business has not only reached all those people for free, but the likelihood of a conversion is a lot higher due to the trust and respect people have for their friends.

So, as a business, how do you get this user-generated content rolling? Get creative. There are so many fun ways for people to engage with your brand and create user-generated content at the same time. Think of people who run competitions like “take a photo of yourself with this billboard and share on social to be in to win.” This part is where you can have a lot of fun — just make sure you’ve got a good way to keep track of all the awesome content that’s about to be generated on your behalf (hashtags, being tagged in a photo, etc.).
